Outreach & Science Communication
An ability to clearly communicate science is beneficial to the public and the scientific community as it corresponds with increased citations and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations. My communication style is rooted in making learning a conversation and engaging with non-experts to show them why the science is important and also how it effects them. I am an exceptional science communicator and have a demonstrated record of communicating complicated scientific concepts to non-technical audiences.
Oregon Field Guide
Geologist Emily Cahoon is fascinated with Oregon sunstones. The copper-bearing gemstone is only found in Oregon's segments of the Columbia River Flood Basalts, and comes in a range of colors from deep red to light green to teal and even yellow. Join Oregon Field Guide as we set out to uncover the many mysteries of these enigmatic stones.
This was done in conjunction with the College of Earth Ocean and Atmospheric sciences at OSU. The focus was to highlight the various preparation steps every rock sample goes through in order to determine an age using ArAr geochronology! We looked at geologic samples through binocular microscopes and observe the mass spectrometers being used to measure argon isotopes.

Local Organizations
I regularly engage with GSOC, COGS, AWG-PNW, university geology clubs. This photo was taken during a 4-day field trip to stops in eastern Oregon associated with the path of the Yellowstone Plume.
Social Media
I love making science more accessible and using social media like Instagram is a great way to do this! I've taken over instagram accounts of GSA, AGU, and various science colleges within universities. I've also created Instagram pages for the OSU Argon Geochronology Lab, a mass spectrometry company, VolcOR, AWG-PNW, and enjoy engaging on my own Instagram account @emily.cahooner

Podcasts
Explaining geology without visuals is difficult! I've been fortunate to have been a guest on the Nick Zentner geology podcast talking about sunstones!
